I’m Teresa, and I’m looking forward to meeting all of you at iTeach on Monday.
I joined the Process Technology department last year after working in the petroleum refining industry for 25 years. I’m excited about learning new ways to present information to my students.  We combine face-to-face lectures with lab activities, and I would like to increase the class time available for the hands-on work.  In addition, many of our students work rotating schedules, so any class material available on line is a big help to their studies, too.

See you Monday!

HI Everyone ~  I am excited to meet you all next week and participate in iTeach!  I work for the UAF/Bristol Bay Campus in Dillingham as the Instructional Services Coordinator.  That means I assist adjunct instructors with all aspects of distance education including eLearning technology.  Hopefully I can design an DEVS 102 Intro to Distance Education class during our time together.  I appreciate this opportunity for intense learning and creativity with a cohort group.  See you soon ~  Sarah Andrew

After teaching elementary school in California and Alaska for eight years, I started working with the School Of ED in 1998 leading a Foundations of Literacy course.  15 years later, I’m still teaching with the School of ED’s Elementary Program. Some of the courses I lead are offered both on-campus and through distance delivery.

I will lead an Introduction to Education class through distance delivery for the first time in the Fall…I’m considering making that class my focus instead of my original plan to make another course my focus.  I led an Assessment of Learning course for the first time this past semester, and planned to focus on that course during the week of iTeach.

The Assessment of Learning course includes activities with Understanding by Design. I’m interested in learning more about UbD to improve my own teaching of the paradigm to elementary education students.

…Katie Kennedy.  I work at UAF doing K-12 outreach for both the Geography Program and Scenarios Network for Alaska & Arctic Planning.  I also work as an adjunct for CTC/UAF Geography and will be building an eLearning course this fall. I’m hoping that iTeach can be of assistance in preparing for both my CTC course and my online course. I’m very much looking forward to next week!

On a more personal note…I have lived in Alaska for 23 years and have no intention of leaving.  I’ve worked in a variety of fields, but my true calling is teaching.  Prior to working at the university I was a K-12 teacher.  I am passionate about place-based education and geospatial technologies.  In other words, I love my job!                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                      cropped_GAW_display

Hi,

I am Alys (alise) Jordan from Ramuson Library. I look forward to next week and meeting everyone.

Have you every tried bowling with your cat? I have. I must say it was a lot of fun, and my cat was so focused on catching the laser that she barely noticed that she ran into a pyramid of red solo cups. Perhaps I should try this again and get video this time.

Please write a brief script and gather some presentation images for a screencast. Think about your UBD tree as you decide on the content of your screencast. Perhaps you need to show students how to format a document, or solve a math problem, or use a certain kind of software.

Also, create a script for a video to be used in your course. The introduction to your course might be a good place to start, but if not an introductory video, then perhaps a video that explains a concept in person, or any other creative idea that comes to mind.

Please continue working on your UBD Tree (the large sheet of paper meant to help you see the overarching picture of your course) and your LAC. Remember that what we’re aiming for here is the construction of a piece of your course (probably an assignment or series of assignments) that is a natural outgrowth of your Big Idea. Use the Learning Assessment Cycle tutor in order to think about and test the details. Complete at least one branch of the UBD tree and create a post based on what you’ve done. The best posts will have the UBD trees embedded or attached!

Better late than never!

One class I took that I felt particularly uninspired by was a college history course that consisted of reading huge chunks of information, listening to the instructor lecture, then doing a basic “key words/concepts/people/places” writing lesson, and eventually taking a long essay style exam covering the same information. There was no discussion, no way for me to reflect on what I learned or add my voice to it– essentially I was just reporting what I had read and not changing or adding to it in any way.

If I had to teach the same course or suggest an alternative methodology, I would propose that students pick a unique perspective within the particular concept and express it with a multi-media presentation.  You could ask students to work in small groups to explore different multi-media tools (Prezi, Storify, Pinterest, Diigo, etc). They should be allowed to pick whichever tool they want, then use that tool to show their reflection on the historical event through a specific perspective (requiring critical thought, additional research, and self-reflection to watch for bias).

Sounds fun to me! And far more engaging!
