I’ve started to set up the Blackboard hybrid class and another class that will use on-line references. Well ya’ll (southern accent applied here) know that just the IDEA of creating a well balanced class gives me a panic attack. I started the Week 1 and “Start Here.” Not bad! I imbedded an image of my dog talking about some of the expectations of the class (a bit nerdy). My BIG “I’m all that and a bag of chips” came when I signed up for a lifetime membership ($60.00 but its a tax deduction) to WonderShare. I created my own video/slideshow that my students can access in the “Introduce Yourself” section of “Start Here.” The vid may be a little on the dramatic or hokky side but I’m so proud of it,I don’t care.  My computer didn’t blowup on me once and (although it took me over 10 hours to do because I’m a technoneophyte and I kept losing the data) I think it was worth it.  I mean, I did this. Okay, yeah I’m bragging but I working with the computer gives me so much anxiety and this made me think, “You know, I might be able to actually be successful at teaching on-line.” So,here’s my sharing.

I’m kinda psyched. I started….somewhere.

Feeling all that,

Aly

I teach English Literature, English composition and Academic Writing for the Sciences. I am a medievalist and minored in botany. My area of research is the use of herbs and their allegorical representations in medieval manuscripts. My children are grown but we have 4 fluffy children who dominate the house.I enjoy outdoorsy things, I am part of a medieval reenactment society and a complete and total nerd (Live Long and Prosper). I will admit that when it comes to computers, I am not savvy in any shape or form; however, I am determined to learn how to teach on-line. I have used Blackboard as a tool every semester but I would not say that the use of a computer in teaching is my strong point other then the use of PowerPoints. Therefore, I am fairly excited to be learning and my goal is to be more comfortable and challenge myself.

Now I want chips. It is a failing of mine. Thankfully I have chips in my cupboard.
